I have a couple of different methods that I rely on to help me overcome reading slumps because I HATE reading slumps! Reading is my favorite thing to do, so it's always a bummer when I'm in a slump. Luckily, I find that I don't stay in reading slumps for too long!
First, I have a special section on my bookshelf containing books that I'm dying to read (and know that I will love). I have specifically saved these particular books for times when I know that I will desperately need to read something really amazing to get out of a reading slump.
The above photograph is currently what is on the section of my bookshelf with books I've been saving to read. Most are books that are part of a series that I already love, but others are books that I just have a really good feeling about and am pretty certain that I will love (like Divergent or Of Poseidon).
Second, I revisit a favorite book. I don't re-read books nearly as much as I would like to, but there's something very comforting about re-reading a favorite. The below photograph is a section of my bookshelf containing books that I've already read, loved, and would like to re-read sometime.
Third, I change up my reading format. I love reading paper books, but I'm also a fan of my Kindle and audiobooks. Sometimes it's nice to switch between the various formats to keep it interesting! I'm trying to refrain from buying more paper books at this point in time because I have too many in my apartment, but it's always fun to buy a new Kindle book (I'm still amazed about how it gets delivered instantly... like magic!) or spend an Audible credit.

Wow, all really great ideas. I too like reading on my Kindle to change things up. I like the idea of having a reading shelf for books I know I will love.

Excellent ideas - I never thought about the unread books on my shelves that way - as books to read when a reading slump hits. And for me, changing genres usually works.

I do the same thing with books I am just dying to read! I have a small section of my bookshelf that is "To Read" only. Most the time it's shoved full with review books, but other times there are just for fun books in there too! I loved all your idea :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I love the idea of having a shelf full of books that you know you will love. I might have to do that myself!

I love the idea of switching up formats! I've never really thought to do that, but that's also because I'm a really reluctant e-reader (if it weren't for NetGalley, I'm not sure I'd do it) - will have to keep that in mind!

I’m so glad to hear that I am not the only person who reserves really good books for situations such as reading slumps! I also love your idea of switching up the formats. I love my Nook but every now and then, I long for the old familiarity of a physical book.
